Weeping of the vine

“Who, working in the fields, between hunger and thirst, hasn't found relief in tasting those sweet transparent drops that the vineyard throws out to greet us, after the long winter sleep?”. This is how grandfather Pietro starts to explain the phenomenon of the "weeping of the vine".

In the last weeks of March and at the beginning of April, the vines communicate their awakening to us through a phenomenon that always arouses wonder: crying. This happens as soon as temperatures rise above 10° and lymphatic activity resumes with enthusiasm. It is an overabundance of "energy" that generates what we call "weeping", but actually it constitutes the sign of a return to life: near the pruning, small drops of sweet and transparent liquid, the sap that from the stem rises impetuously towards the branches, to spray the plant and, in some way, disinfect and heal the "wounds" of pruning. Once this process is finished, which can last some days, with very consistent tears, every 30-60 seconds, the budding phase will begin. And the vine, on which the first shoots appear, will begin to dress waiting for May flowering.
